Annual duck blind registration at Wappapello Lake announced

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake will hold the annual duck blind registration on August 18 at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center.

Anyone wishing to place a floating blind on the lake needs to be signed up before 1 p.m.  If you are not signed up by this time, the Corps says you will be required to wait until the drawing/placement process is finished to register and choose a location for your blind.

According to the Corps of Engineers, blinds must be provided by the applicant and meet the “Minimum Standards for Floating Duck Blinds” (copies will be available the day of the drawing). The registration fee for a duck blind is $15 and applicants must bring cash, in the exact amount, or a personal check or money order made payable to “FAO, USACE, St. Louis District.”

Mo. State Parks to host Great American Backyard Campout

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Natural Resources says the Great American Backyard Campout in Missouri state parks will be Saturday, June 23.

The event is a nationwide initiative by the National Wildlife Federation to encourage families and communities to reconnect and experience the outdoors. To help you celebrate, eight Missouri state parks are offering special programs and activities to make this night one to remember.

"The Great American Backyard Campout is a great way for families to get outdoors and enjoy nature, whether you’re an experienced camper or trying it for the first time. Once you’ve experienced your first camping trip, you’ve taken the first step to creating a healthy and fun family camping tradition," said Bill Bryan, director of Missouri State Parks, a division of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Mo. State Parks’ beaches open to visitors

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation says 17 designated swimming beaches in Missouri's state parks are now open to visitors.

According to the MDNR, the only exceptions include: beaches at Lewis and Clark State Park in Buchanan County will stay closed for continuing repairs related to last year's flooding, and Trail of Tears State Park in Cape Girardeau County will stay closed while staff finishes work on the lake's dam. You can visit mostateparks.com for more information.

The department samples the water at all designated beaches in the state park system weekly during the recreational season to determine suitability for swimming. MDNR says the sample test results indicate a snap shot of the water quality taken at the beaches at a specific time; however a single sample does not provide an overall sense of the water quality in the lake where the beach is located.

DEXTER, MO (KFVS) - I stopped by the West Park in Dexter, Mo. Tuesday morning and took a couple of pictures while I was there.

It is located on Highway Business 60 and is such a pretty park. There is a great playground for the little kids.

There are two pavilions and nice, clean restrooms. The paved walking trail is such an asset to the community. Now we don't have an excuse not to get out and get our walk in.

I just like to go there to relax and read or watch the squirrels play.
