Back to School Bash scheduled for Aug. 7

DEXTER, MO (KFVS) - The Lighthouse Christian Center will hold a Back to School Bash on August 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Back To Scool Bash is a free event. They will be giving away school supplies, offering free hair cuts, vision and hearing test, dental, food, outside games and activities.

Southeast awarded $500K grant for energy engineering training

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University has been awarded a $500,000 grant to be used to train students on energy engineering.

According to a news release, the grant is from the U.S. Department of Energy develop a Satellite Industrial Assessment Center for training.

According to Southeast, the  five-year gift comes as a sub-grant from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Faculty members at Southeast and the University of Missouri-Columbia are working together on the project titled “Missouri Industrial Assessment and Education Center.”

The satellite site at Southeast is intended to provide students with practical experience and training in energy engineering.

According to the university, the satellite center will be integrated into existing programs at Southeast to create innovative approaches to deliver IAC’s educational and outreach services.

Puxico Jr. High holds career day

PUXICO, MO (KFVS) - Students at Puxico Junior High learned about a variety of careers Friday.

The school holds a career fair every few years for fifth through eighth graders.

The students heard from 42 professionals in a range of career paths like in the medical field, farming, insurance, cooking, music, an airline representative and those in the media.

Students say it's important to start thinking about career choices even at a young age.

"Kids here in Puxico, they really don't have many opportunities I think from being from a small town, but that doesn't stop many people so I think it gives kids here a really good opportunity to learn about different subjects for careers," said seventh grader Stephanie Brannum who hopes to begin a career in broadcast journalism.

Hearing from the professionals peaked an interest in some students.
