Students can apply now through Feb. 15 for foundation scholarship

(KFVS) - Students in Missouri and Kentucky can begin applying Saturday, December 1 for the Jimmy Rane Foundation scholarship.

The Jimmy Rane Foundation provides sholarship opportunities to students who diplay academic excellence, exemplary leadership skills and community involvement. The foundation benefits those who exhibit financial need and awards students who demonstrate a strong desire and ability to overcome tough barriers to achieve their goals.

Students can apply for the scholarship through February 15, 2013.

MoDOT announces winners of 9th Annual Bridge Building Competition

(KFVS) - After weeks of work to build the most efficient model bridges, Southeast Missouri high school students put their bridges to the test Friday at the completion of MoDOT's Ninth Annual Bridge Building Competition.

The competition challenges high school juniors and seniors to design and construct the most efficient model bridge using limited materials-15 pieces of balsa wood, thread and glue.

Oak Ridge, Ste. Genevieve and Kennett High Schools received first, second and third place for best overall performance, respectively. These schools received cash prizes donated by the Chapter 10 Transportation Employees Association of Missouri, as well as a U.S. flag donated by U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson.

In addition, five students were recognized for building the lightest bridges that carried the greatest loads. Winners included:

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation will test bridges entered into their 9th Annual Bridge Building Competition on Thursday, November 15 at Cape West 14 Cine, located at 247 Siemers Drive.

Doors will open at 8 a.m., with the competition beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding at approximately 2 p.m.

The competition challenges high school juniors and seniors to design and build the most efficient model bridge using limited materials-15 pieces of balsa wood, thread and glue.

"We are very pleased to have over 40 area schools participating in this year's competition," said Senior Highway Designer Anita Clark. "In addition to giving students a great opportunity to learn about engineering, participating schools can also win prizes."

Mo. high school seniors can apply for John Dennis Scholarship

SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Sheriff's Association is offering the John Dennis Scholarship to 16 college-bound Missouri high school seniors.

The award was established in 1988 in honor of former Scott County Sheriff John Dennis. He served his country for 24 years and, in 1963 was elected president of the Missouri Sheriff's Association. In 1976 Dennis retired from the office of sheriff following a successful campaign for the Missouri Senate seat in District 27, a position he held until his retirement from state government in 1992.

In 1988, Dennis was presented a Distinguished Service Award at which time the establishment of the John Dennis Scholarship Fund was announced. Since that time, the award has gone to Missouri students pursuing careers in the criminal justice field.

Southeast awarded $1.1 million student achievement grant

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University says they have been awarded a five-year $1.1 million federal grant that benefits several students.

The Ronald E. McNair post baccalaureate achievement program benefits first generation, limited income and underrepresented students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities.

According to the university, the program began at Southeast in October 2003.

The McNair Scholars Program is one of the seven federal TRIO programs.

School officials say this was the most competitive grant application process in the program’s history. At the beginning of the competition, 187 programs existed. In June 2012, 334 proposals were submitted for review, and only 134 were funded.
