Missouri 8th District candidates answer questions

MISSOURI (KFVS)- The special election to fill the U.S. Representative for Missouri's 8th district is just about a month away on June 4.

Missouri voters will choose someone to fill the seat Rep. JoAnn Emerson vacated.

Steve Hodges is the Democrat candidate. He has worked in the Missouri House of Representatives since elected in 2006, serving Mississippi, New Madrid, Scott and Stoddard counties.

Jason Smith is the Republican candidate. He has worked in the Missouri House of Representatives since voters elected him in 2005 and serves Crawford, Dent, Phelps and Reynolds counties.

Bill Slantz is the Libertarian candidate, and founded his own consulting company.

Doug Enyart is the Constitution Party candidate and founded his company in forestry consulting.

Heartland News sat down with each one and asked a few questions.

State Treasurer offers financial "spring cleaning" checklist

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KFVS) - State Treasurer Clint Zweifel is providing Missourians a financial “spring cleaning” checklist.

Zweifel says he hopes Missourians will use to keep their finances in order and their property from becoming unclaimed property.

“There are a few simple steps each of us can take on a regular basis to keep our records up-to-date and our estates in order,” Treasurer Zweifel said. “It is important that we check on our accounts, safe deposit boxes, life insurance policies and wills. By making sure that our contact information is correct, our fees are paid up and changes made, Missourians can help keep their property where it belongs and avoid having to file Unclaimed Property claims to get it back.”

Here are a few “spring cleaning” tips for your finances from Zweifel:

1.      Make sure your bank has your current information. If you have moved or changed your name, be sure to inform your bank.

Missouri voters to decide on tobacco tax hike

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)-

Missouri voters will be asked to raise the state's tobacco tax by passing Proposition B when they head to the polls Tuesday.
Currently, Missouri has the lowest cigarette tax in the nation, along with the 11th highest smoking rate.

Supporters of Prop B say the tax would change both of those numbers drastically.

Missouri Amendment 3 would change judicial appointment process

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- On Tuesday, Missouri voters will decide on Amendment 3, which would change the judicial appointment process.

Amendment 3 would modify what is known as the "Missouri Plan" in state courts, which claims to keep the appointment process of judges non-partisan.

Proposition filed on Mo. tobacco taxes to fund education, health

(KFVS) - A group of organizations and individuals led by the American Cancer Society have filed a proposition on tobacco taxes to provide funding for public education, higher education and public health in Missouri.

The coalition sponsoring the measure is made up of medical and public health professionals, education groups, business leaders and community leaders.

“We are pleased this measure has potential to help school districts deal with the funding problems they face,” says Missouri School Boards’ Association Executive Director Dr. Carter Ward. “This proposition presents the voters of Missouri the opportunity to voice their opinion on this issue.”

The group says Missouri has the lowest cigarette tax of all states in the nation, and very high smoking and other tobacco product use rates. They say the measure filed.

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Senator Roy Blunt toured the Three River College Center and met with community leaders on the Poplar Bluff main campus on Friday, September 2.

Blunt asked questions about enrollment numbers and the in-demand green diesel program in Dexter, and heard feedback from Poplar Bluff community leaders about Three Rivers' impact on the Southeast Missouri region.

“This is a great institution,” Blunt said during the visit on Friday, Sept. 2. “I’m glad to be here with you. My agenda is to do everything I can to help you. The more I understand what I need to be thinking about, the better I am at making the case, and that’s why I’m here today. I look forward to working with you and listening.”
