Oliver first area state prosecutor to receive DEA award

STODDARD COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russ Oliver is the first area state prosecutor to receive a Drug Enforcement Agency award.

“It was the snowball that got it all started for DEA,” that’s how DEA Regional Supervisory Special Agent Michael Scalise described Oliver’s work on the synthetic drug epidemic.

Scalise said at an award ceremony on Monday at the Federal Courthouse in Cape Girardeau that Oliver is the first state prosecutor in this area to receive this award because his leadership and work on the frontlines of this new battle in the war on drugs has been instrumental in law enforcement’s advancements against the growing threat of synthetics

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Southeast Missouri Chapter of the American Red Cross is sending Glenn and Martha Harmon from Puxico to Orlando, Florida to prepare for Tropical Storm Isaac.

They will leave Friday with an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV).

The ERV from Cape will be joining a fleet of 50 vehicles being pre-staged in Florida in case they are needed.  Another 78 vehicles are on stand-by.

The Southeast Missouri Chapter has already deployed Maggie Makins, a sheltering volunteer, who will be joined Friday by Kathy Haas another sheltering volunteer.  Both are from Jackson.

Hundreds of other trained Red Cross disaster volunteers are in Florida preparing to open dozens of shelters across the state if needed.

The Red Cross has a new hurricane app that features information on Red Cross shelters, plus a toolkit with a flashlight, strobe light and alarm.

Veterans honored by Lt. Gov. Kinder

Veterans honored by Lt. Gov. Kinder

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Cape Girardeau military veteran Richard Cornwell was honored Monday by Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder.

Cornwell is one of three to get Kinder's Veterans Service Award in recognition of volunteer work done for the region.

Cornwell served in the Marines and the Navy.

Now, he volunteers five days a week, 10 hours a day at Southeast Hospital.

His primary job is transporting patients to and from the imaging department.

Cornwell says he enjoys the job mainly because of what he gets in return.

"I love to do it," Cornwell said. "It's the kind of work that I like to do. Besides, I love the wisdom of the patients. Older people that you can talk to. And every once in a while you can put a smile on one of them's face. Let them know that you care."

Other veterans honored by Kinder include Tom Love of Dexter and a posthumous award to the family of Jerry Seabaugh.

"Only flower" in Afghanistan

"Only flower" in Afghanistan

ESSEX, MO (KFVS) - Essex native SFC Robert Myers sent us this picture for our Spring flowers 2012 slideshow.

Myers says he searched and searched and this is the only flower he has been able to find in Afghanistan. He said, "Looks like a weed but hey, it's a flower."

He says he can repost some more when he gets back state-side at the end of the month and getting back to color instead of rocks will be a welcomed change for sure.

You can click here to see our slideshow. To send in your own spring flower pictures, you can e-mail them to cNews@kfvs12.com or click here to upload them. Don't forget to include your name, where you're from and a brief description of the picture.
