Community food drive scheduled for March 31

DEXTER, MO (KFVS) - The First United Methodist Church of Dexter will host a Community Food Drive "Stuff a Truck" on Saturday, March 31.

Proceeds from the drive will go to the Stoddard County Gospel Mission.

Several churches and organizations will be participating in the city-wide effort, including First Christian Church, First Baptist Church, Sweet Prospect General Baptist and the Quick Cash Loan Co.

Trucks will be located on the parking lots of Harp's Food, Town and Country, USA Drugs and Wal-Mart in Dexter from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

CCSM will continue collecting money for tornado victims in Southern Mo.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Multi-Agency Relief Center announced they have closed in Branson, but Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri will continue to assist individuals affected by the EF2 tornado that impacted portions of Branson, Kimberling City, and surrounding areas.

Those living in Barry, Dallas, Stone, and Taney Counties who still need help are encouraged to call 417-624-3790. 

Many individuals were able to find needed assistance at the MARC. By the MARC’s closing, Catholic Charities had provided assistance to about 240 families. However, they say this is just one step in the recovery process, much more work remains to be done. With so many homes and businesses damaged, families are still in need of temporary housing, food, furniture, clothing and personal hygiene products.

Puxico schools' Art Dept. to host reception for wildlife artist

PUXICO, MO (KFVS) - The Puxico R-8 Schools art department will be hosting a reception for wildlife artist Kathy Dickson on Monday, March 5 in the high school art room and lobby from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

You can come visit with the artist, view her work, and participate in a few art projects. Activities for the night include an exhibit of animal pelts plus a variety of information from the Missouri Department of Conservation, mural painting, fly tieing, stamping projects, plaster casting of animal tracks and t-shirt designs. Please bring a medium or dark colored t-shirt if you want to participate in that project.

Kathy Dickson has won numerous regional and national awards for her wildlife paintings. She was the artist-in-residence at Puxico in February as part of a nature art grant funded by the Missouri Arts Council.

Wild horses, burros available for adoption from Bureau of Land Management

JACKSON, MO (KFVS) - The U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management will be offering about 40 wild horses to potential adopters Feb. 17-18 at Flickerwood Arena.

BLM says the horse range from yearling to five years old and as an adopter, your challenge will be to develop a trusting relationship with the wild horse or burro.

“The BLM manages, protects, and controls wild horses and burros under the authority of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act,” said BLM-Eastern States State Director, John Lyon. “This law authorizes the BLM to remove excess wild horses and burros from the range to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands.  The Bureau’s appropriate management level is 26,600.”

Second annual Great ShakeOut scheduled for Tues.

(KFVS) - The second annual Great Central U.S. ShakeOut will be Feb. 7.

According to the Red Cross, eight states in the New Madrid Seismic Zone will participate in this earthquake drill at precisely 10:15 a.m. They say more than three million people participated in the first ShakeOut earlier this year, including more than 450,000 Missourians, most from schools.

The Red Cross says Feb. 7 is the 200th anniversary of the largest earthquake ever to occur in the Midwest.

Lee Greenwood to perform at Valentines for Veterans concert

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The Valentines for Veterans concert will be Friday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m.

The concert will be hosted by the John J. Pershing VAMC at the Black River Coliseum. They say the concert will feature country music artist Lee Greenwood.

Friday is National Wear Red Day for the AHA

(KFVS) - The American Heart Association is reminding everyone to wear red on Friday, Feb. 3 for National Wear Red Day.

The AHA says this is the day hundreds of thousands of men and women remember the women who lost their lives to heart disease and pledge to fight this number one killer of women.
