27,000 pounds of food collected during Stamp Out Hunger event

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Southeast Missouri Food Bank says over 25,700 pounds of food was collected during Stamp Out Hunger to benefit participating communities.

The food bank would like to thank the National Association of Letter Carriers, Tom Bolen, NALC Stamp Out Hunger food drive coordinator for Cape and Jackson and the following communities who stepped up to help families in need this year, including:

  • Cape Girardeau
  • Jackson
  • Poplar Bluff
  • Kennett
  • Malden
  • Sikeston
  • Fredericktown
  • Dexter

First Friday in Dexter

DEXTER, MO (KFVS) - Friday night was Historic Downtown Dexter's First Friday Event.

Local merchants stayed open late for shopping and music was also provided.

This will continue on the first Friday of each month through December in downtown Dexter.

DEXTER, MO (KFVS) - A huge crowd gathered Friday night for the Relay for Life event in Dexter, Mo.

There was music, food, and fun for all at the West City Park. The event was an opportunity to honor cancer survivors and remember people we have lost to cancer, and to raise funds and awareness for cancer.

Rodger Smith Memorial Ride, Drive scheduled for Sat.

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The Rodger Smith Memorial Ride and Drive fundraiser for the United Cancer Assistance Network will be Saturday, May 5.

The ride will be in honor of Smith who passed away from cancer on Dec. 17, 2011.

Sign up will be at 11 a.m. at Richards Roadware in Poplar Bluff and the ride starts at 12 p.m. Participants will be going through Poplar Bluff headed north with a police escort throught town.

Organizers say they are expecting 100 bikes and don't know how many cars or trucks will participate.

American Red Cross to hold new volunteer orientation

American Red Cross to hold new volunteer orientation

The American Red Cross Southeast Missouri Chapter is holding a new volunteer orientation on Sunday, May 6.

The orientation is scheduled from 2-5 p.m. at 2430 Myra Drive.  According to the Red Cross, the classes are free of charge.

The meeting will inform potenital volunteers about the Red Cross' mission, values, goals and training.

You can register now for the 4th Annual 5KFVS

(KFVS) - Registration is open for the 4th Annual 5KFVS.

On May 19, starting at 8:30 a.m., you can run through downtown Cape Girardeau with the Heartland News Team. The start and finish will be at South Main Street in front of Hutson's Furniture. A one mile fun run will follow at about 9:30 a.m.

The entry fee is $25 for the 5KFVS run/walk and $10 for the one mile fun run. You can mail the entry fee with the registration form. Make checks payable to KFVS12. Checke in and packet pick up will be May 18 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at KFVS12 or May 19 from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. at the race site. Proceeds go to the United Way of Southeast Missouri.
