Presentation on Civil War project scheduled at Cape River Heritage Museum

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University and Ellen Ryan, digital project manager at Kent Library, will talk on Saturday, May 19 at 2 p.m. about a grant-funded project currently underway to identify and digitize original documents and photographs from the Civil War period.

The presentation will be at the Cape River Heritage Museum at 538 Independence Street. The project, "Confluence and Crossroads: The Civil War in the American Heartland" is a collaborative effort between Kent Library’s Special Collections, the Center for Regional History and the Department of History at Southeast Missouri State University, the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center, and the Special Collections Research Center at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

DEXTER, MO (KFVS) - Friday night was Historic Downtown Dexter's First Friday Event.

Local merchants stayed open late for shopping and music was also provided.

This will continue on the first Friday of each month through December in downtown Dexter.

'Friends' help spruce up Capaha Park

Friends at the Park were at Capaha Park this morning from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. planting and beautifying the park.

Over 150 people came out to beautify the park with planting flowers and putting new wood chips on the playground equipment grounds.

It was organized by the parks and recreation; they did this to make the park more beautiful and welcoming for people when visiting the park.

Bloomfield couple take unusual trip to prom

BLOOMFIELD, MO (KFVS) - Austin Roberts and Tiffany Case took quite a different vehicle to prom this year.

Austin took his girlfriend Tiffany in a jacked up truck he built with his dad.  Many folks in town thought it was the talk of the town that night.

Austin had to use a ladder just to get into the rig.

He is a recent graduate and Tiffany is a senior.

Website names Missouri top state for camping in U.S.

(KFVS) - Missouri has been named the top state for camping in the United States.

About.com announced the results Friday of their annual Readers' Choice Award for Favorite State for Camping, and Missouri took top honors with the website's gold award. Other states that placed include: Montana with the silver award and Colorado with the bronze award.

“The First Lady and I are proud that Missouri has been selected as a renowned camping destination,” Gov. Missouri Division of Tourism Director Katie Steele Danner credited Missouri’s State Parks and privately-held campgrounds for helping Missouri secure the top spot on About.com’s Readers’ Choice Awards.
