Summer blood drives scheduled, one in Puxico

Summer blood drives scheduled, one in Puxico

STODDARD COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The American Red Cross has scheduled their summer blood drives for Southern Missouri and Southern Illinois.

The Red Cross invites anyone with a little more than an hour to take out of their time to visit one of their blood donor centers or blood drive. According to the Red Cross, the need for blood is constant because the shelf life is up to 35 days for blood and five days for platelets.

With the annual hurricane season not far away, the Red Cross says it is important to have blood on the shelves in preparation.

All presenting blood and platelet donors will be automatically entered in a drawing for a Music City getaway.

Local paramedics return from Joplin, Mo.

They answered a call for help.

When their supervisors told them their assistance was needed in Joplin, Mo. paramedics from North Scott County Ambulance, South Scott County, Perry County, and Stoddard County responded.

Last Friday two members from each ambulance district packed up and formed a team heading to the tornado ravaged city.

"There's so much destruction," said Lisa Little.

Little is a paramedic with North Scott County. She says her team spent four days in Joplin answering EMS calls on the South end of the city.

"At one point we worked 78 hours straight," said Little.

She believes they were there to help relieve some of the stress taken on by local emergency crews who have been working around the clock since the tornado hit last Sunday.

"I hope nothing like that ever happens around here, but if it does I hope that people here would pull it together like out there," said Little. "It was organized."
