Commission adopts plan to cut 1,200 MoDOT jobs

The Missouri Department of Transportation makes plans to adjust to cuts to their budge over the next few years after a final meeting was held in Jefferson City on June 8, 2011.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission voted on a proposal that cuts down on internal resources for MoDot, but should still keep money on the roads. A spokesperson for MoDot says the cuts will make them a more efficient agency so that more funding can go to road and bridge projects.

The commission is adopting a plan called the Boulder Five-Year Direction, which will save the state $512 million by 2015.

The Boulder Five-Year Direction takes MODOT from 10 districts to 7.

Missouri drivers will not see the results of the budget cuts as the changes are happening internally. Planned projects will go on as scheduled. But within the next few years, less projects will be added.

Tips for traveling safely with medications

Tips for traveling safely with medications

STODDARD COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Perry County Memorial Hospital is offering tips for traveling safely with medications.

The hospital says it is important to talk to your pharmacist before you leave home about the proper precautions when traveling with medications.

"People aren't typically attentive to all of the factors they should consider regarding medication when they're packing for a trip, traveling or when they are going to be exposed to the sun," said Dana Cover, a pharmacist at Prescriptions Plus Pharmacy at the hospital.

Cover recommends a few extra steps in your travel plans such as:

  • Check medication bottles for risk of "photosensitivity," which can increase your chance of sunburn
  • Store medications in a cool, dry place and avoid direct sunlight because heat and humidity can affect the potency of medications
  • Do not leave medicine packed in a suitcase or vehicle trunk

Humane society: take care to keep outdoor pets cool

STODDARD COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Caruthersville Humane Society has released some tips for pet owners during the hot summer months.

According to the humane society, the summer heat can quickly dehydrate your pet, so it is important to keep clean water available at all times. Pet owners should remember shade or an area away from direct sunlight is also a must.

Along with shade and plenty of water, it is also advised to not leave animals in a car for any period of time during the hot summer months. The humane society says even in a short period of time, a car can quickly heat up above the outdoor temperature and your pet can suffer, or even die.

The Caruthersville Humane Society President and Animal Cruelty Investigator Karol Wilcox says fleas and ticks are more prominent this year along with biting flies.

"Please take the time to protect your pet against these pests," said Wilcox. "Open wounds from these bites can cause serious infections.
