Lawsuits filed against Stoddard Co. officials

Kevin Bay, the man accused of distributing synthetic drugs in Stoddard County, had his court appearance continued Thursday morning.

But what's interesting is why the continuance was granted.

One of Bay's attorneys is Mike Colona, the Minority Whip in the Missouri House of Representatives.  He could not appear because the Missouri legislature is in special session.

In August, officers raided Bay's business, Bocomo Bay, and seized thousands of dollars worth of synthetic drugs.

Stoddard County Prosecutor Russ Oliver says Bay distributed those drugs in Stoddard County.

The raid was conducted after Missouri's new synthetic drug law was enacted.  Representative Colona was one of just 13 members of the house to vote against the bill.

DAEOC offices changing, programs facing drastic cuts

Drastic cutbacks force big changes at an agency that helps those who need it the most.

The Delta Area Economic Opportunity Corporation (DAEOC) is currently restructuring its outreach program. It's all because of a 50% cut in the Federal Community Service Block Grant.

It's a program that drives many of the services DAEOC provides.

Delores Pruitt showed up to the Mississippi County DAEOC office in East Prairie on Wednesday only to find out, it's closed. "I'm very depressed," said Pruitt.

DAEOC serves six counties in southeast Missouri. The Mississippi County and Stoddard County offices are moving to Scott County.

"I guess I'll have to hitch hike to Sikeston now," said Pruitt.

The federal government handed down a 50% cut.

Delta Area Economic Opportunity Corporation reduces locations, hours

(KFVS) - The Delta Area Economic Opportunity Corporation (DAEOC) is restructuring their outreach program.

Cutbacks in the Federal Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) program which drives many of the services provided have caused the DAEOC to reduce locations and cut back on operating hours.

The DAEOC will no longer operate a full time physical outreach office in every county of their service area.

The offices have been combined and reduced to four locations.

Dunklin County residents will continue to be served through the Kennett office and Pemiscot residents will continue to be served by the Hayti office.  New Madrid County residents will now be served at an outreach office adjacent to the corporate offices in Portageville.  Residents of Scott, Stoddard, and Mississippi Counties will be served from a new location in Sikeston effective Monday, September 12.

All offices will be open 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Part of $330,000 stolen from school district recovered

The Stoddard County prosecutor and Dexter Police Department are investigating how more than $300,000 stolen from the Dexter school district.

On Aug. 17, $330,305.43 was stolen from the Dexter school district via fraudulent electronic transfers, according to Stoddard County Prosecutor Russ Oliver.

At least $116,924.33 has been recovered and returned to Dexter schools so far.

Authorities have not pinpointed exactly how the fraud happened or who is responsible yet.  A preliminary investigation reveals the bank's security system was not compromised, functioned properly and immediately sent email notifications of suspicious activity to the school district.

Oliver says it does not appear that the school district's security system was compromised.

Red Cross helps families, businesses prepare for emergencies

Red Cross helps families, businesses prepare for emergencies

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - For National Preparedness Month the Southeast Missouri Chapter of the American Red Cross is calling on families, businesses, schools and organizations to take steps now to become better prepared for the next emergency or disaster.

National Preparedness Month provides the nation with the opportunity to both remember the victims and honor those who responded, and to make a renewed commitment to being better prepared for the future.

“We all must do what we can to prepare our families and make our communities ready for the next emergency” said Jamie Koehler, Emergency Services Director. “Everyone can take three key action steps to get started: build a kit, make a plan, and be informed.”

According to the Red Cross, emergency preparedness kits should include enough supplies for at least three days in case you have to evacuate.
