Winter weather, minor wrecks slow traffic

JACKSON, MO (KFVS)-

The Jackson Police Department reports traffic on Hwy. 25 near South Elementary was snarled after several fender benders in the area Thursday morning.

Police say none of the wrecks appeared to be serious, but the roads are slick.

Jackson Schools canceled classes early Thursday morning due to winter weather.

The Dexter Police Department reports some bridges beginning to ice over.  The street department is spreading solution on the roads near the schools and will continue to spread solution on city streets through town.

Crews in western Kentucky are out treating bridges, overpasses, and other potential trouble spots in Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman, Lyon, and Fulton counties, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Bloomfield sends out tickets for unpaid water bills

BLOOMFIELD, MO (KFVS)-

"Pay up, or we'll see you in court." That's the message city leaders are sending to water customers in Bloomfield.

Thousands of dollars in unpaid water bills has city leaders looking for creative ways to collect.  Those who've moved out of their homes in Bloomfield and have failed to pay are finding a bit of a surprise in their mailboxes: a ticket.

"Just weird and random." That's how Jordan Coleman describes the ticket she got in the mail for stealing water.

"It's a bit over the top," Coleman said.

She apparently still owed the city about $40 after moving out a rental in Bloomfield in late 2009.

"They could have sent me a notice before putting a stealing mark on my record," said Coleman.

The city says notices did go out ahead of those tickets.

"It's basically a collection process," said Mayor Scott Staggs.

MoDOT: Be ready to adjust driving in snowy conditions

MoDOT: Be ready to adjust driving in snowy conditions

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)-

With light snow in the forecast for much of the
state, MoDOT is reminding drivers to be ready to adjust to driving conditions as the
predicted snow flies.

Officials say even light precipitation can
quickly cause roads to become slick and dangerous.

According to MoDOT, of the biggest travel issues when winter
weather strikes is black ice.

Officials say motorists need to be especially cautious as
falling drizzle freezes or melted snow refreezes making black ice a concern,
especially on bridges and overpasses.

MoDOT
encourages drivers to remember the following tips when driving in inclement
weather:

-Always wear your seat belt.

-Use common sense, and adjust
your speed to suit driving conditions.

-If weather conditions warrant
windshield wipers, turn your headlights on. They help you see   and help other
drivers see you.  Plus, it's the law.

"Show-Me ShakeOut" earthquake poster contest

"Show-Me ShakeOut" earthquake poster contest

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The State Emergency Management Agency and the Missouri Seismic Safety Commission are sponsoring the "Show-Me ShakeOut" poster contest for Missouri students in third, fourth and fifth grades.

Students across Missouri are invited to create a classroom poster promoting the ShakeOut earthquake preparedness drill on Feb. 17, 2012. SEMA says last year's winners were from Cuba, Macon and Troy.

Because many Missourians live within the New Madrid Seismic Zone, SEMA says each February Missouri observes Earthquake Awareness Month.

The statewide contest winners will receive $50 cash cards and emergency first aid kits for their classrooms. Winning posters will be displayed on SEMA's web site and featured at earthquake awareness events during 2012.

Contest guidelines include:
